Brunswick Forest

Elementary school students who reside in Brunswick Forest and attend Town Creek Elementary School will soon be able to enjoy a new addition to their school’s outdoor facilities. Town Creek Elementary School recently became one of just 600 schools in the country to receive a Lowes Toolbox for Education grant to build an outdoor garden learning space.

FOODCORPS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS
The $5,000 grant was applied for by FoodCorps Service Member Elin Amundson who teaches lessons at the school about eating and growing fruits and vegetables. Amundson works with the child nutrition team at the school to help incorporate more local produce in to school lunches. FoodCorps, a national AmeriCorps service project, currently works with four schools in Brunswick County. The organization’s aim is to help reduce childhood obesity by facilitating access for kids to fresh fruits and vegetables.

A LEARNING GARDEN
The new garden at Town Creek will gives students hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to get their hands dirty planting vegetables that will later be harvested for use in the student meals. The new garden is also accessible to students with special needs with a unique “ability garden” that includes a wheelchair accessible garden bed. The garden will also feature a shade pergola, vertical gardens and a music wall.
