Health Benefits, Basic Rules, and Getting Started
Pickleball is not only a blast to play, but it is also fantastic for your health! This low-impact sport is easy on the joints, making it ideal for players of all ages. It enhances cardiovascular health and improves balance and coordination. Those quick bursts of movement and strategic thinking will keep your reflexes and mind sharp too! Plus, it’s a fantastic way to meet new friends and socialize!
The Basics: A Pickleball Primer
Pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, it uses paddles and a perforated plastic ball. Games can be singles or doubles, and scoring is similar to ping pong. The goal is to score points by hitting the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court without them returning it successfully. For beginners, the essential gear includes a pickleball paddle, a few pickleballs, and comfortable athletic wear.
Health Professional’s Perspective on Pickleball
Dr. Patrick McCauley, DPT, Head of the Physical Therapy Department at Coastal Integrative Health, shares essential tips to prevent injuries: “Although pickleball can be seen as a leisurely sport, it also can pose a high risk for falls and injuries. Some of the major fall-related injuries associated with pickleball include FOOSH type injuries (fall on an outstretched hand), head injuries, and hip or knee fractures.”
Tips to prevent a fall type injury with pickleball include:
1) Wear proper footwear
2) Take lessons on proper technique, such as avoiding backpedaling
3) Review your medication side-effects (some may cause dizziness)
4) Keep active with an exercise program
Benefits of Physical Therapy:
1) Determine your fall risk and provide exercises to help decrease risk
2) Improve joint mobility, range of motion, and strength
